Morristown is
Morris County’s most famous municipality. Its history is part of the rich heritage of our country. The town and the region are known for their important role in the American Revolution.
Early in the 1700’s, permanent settlers were attracted to the area by discoveries of iron ore. This vital resource and Morristown’s strategic location made the town extremely valuable to revolutionary forces.
During the winter of 1779-80 and on several other occasions, General Washington headquartered at the beautiful Ford Mansion, now a National Historic Park and Museum. Revolutionary soldiers spent the long winter of 1779-80 camped at nearby Jockey Hollow.
Today, Morristown retains its historic past in public as well as private construction. As the county seat and the region’s largest commercial and shopping center, Morristown is the scene of contemporary life surrounded by structures and sites of historic significance.
